Who To Know : Sayvon Friend X Von Canon
Hometown: Milwaukee, WI
Creative Mediums: Photography X Digital and Collage X Film X Poetry X Culinary Art.
"Simply, I'm Black, and that's liberating."
Black Yoke first met Sayvon Friend, Aka Von Canon, while he flashed his camera at the She Woke Show. Hosted at Ski Club Gallery, She Woke: Presented By Black Yoke, included Milwaukee creatives Xerione, Lania Sproles, Sam Becker and the founder of Twhat Zine, Cassandra Papesh. Shout out to them!..but enough about that, lets get back to Sayvon Friend X Von Canon. He gives off this shy personality of someone quietly taking it all in. Sincerely and genuinely an open canvas, unafraid of growth. Unafraid to be inspired and make his own path as a creative. It's a interesting thing to witness. You have Sayvon Friend, and you have Von Canon, two slight variations of the same instant, who feed off each other in order for the latter to express it. Sayvon Friend takes it all in, and Von Canon lets it all out. In March 2016, when Sayvon Friend purchased his camera, the symbiotic relationship between the experience of Sayvon Friend, and the expression of Von Canon came to be.
As creatives we have this inner battle between being an innovator, the first to do it, whatever "it" is, and allowing yourself to be inspired by those that come before you. For Sayvon Friend, its the opposite, his goal is to be "inspired as much as I aim to be creative". Starving his distractions to feed his focus has allowed him to be un-beholded to just one creative form, as well as the ability to notice those life experiences helping to manifest his creativity. In all realness, as real can get, this is a solid human, an inspiring creative. Doing it for the Culture! Doing it for the community, and sowing seeds. Sayvon Friend aka Von Canon represents the meaning of Black Yoke, a true creative willing to create, and perpetuate value to a creative community who supports Black culture, and other Black men, like creative VonnieQuest w/Remnants Of A Room. Not to mention, the massive support he has for anything with "black girl magic sprinkled on it" represented by his many collaborative works, with Vee Adams, and other Milwaukee women of color. And why?, "Because simply I'm Black, and thats liberating". Follow. Support, and Check out Von Canon's creative platforms @instagram, and @facebook.
Upcoming Works: Black Man Be: A debut photo series capturing 222 Black men. "Black Man Be" is an affirmation. A Mantra. An assertive deviation from the normalized stigmas scotch taped to represent the collection of Black men". The outlet for all Black men to be oneself, "Black Man Be" is their opportunity to positively recognize themselves in other black men, as the different and similar individuals they are.
